Joel Owen is an Associate Professor in Evidence-Based Psychological Therapies at the University of East Anglia, Norwich Medical School, within the Department of Clinical Psychology and Psychological Therapies. He serves as Programme Director for the Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner (PWP) training programme, overseeing its strategic development and delivery. He is actively engaged in research, teaching, and leadership within the department and across the Faculty.

Joel's research centers on wellbeing and resilience, particularly among healthcare staff and psychological therapy trainees. He integrates qualitative and mixed-methods approaches, with a strong interest in ancient practical philosophy—especially Stoicism—and its relevance to modern psychological resilience. His work explores burnout, emotional wellbeing, and supportive interventions in clinical training environments.
His recent publications highlight a consistent focus on trainee wellbeing, resilience in therapists, and innovative educational practices such as Schwartz Rounds and hybrid teaching models. These works reflect a deep engagement with both clinical and educational challenges in mental health training.

Joel actively supervises research within the Clinical Psychology Doctorate programme and contributes to teaching in the CAP and IAPT Long-term Conditions training. He holds external roles including peer reviewer for academic journals and External Examiner for the University of Manchester’s PGCert in Primary Mental Healthcare (IAPT PWP training). He has also contributed to public discourse through media appearances and commissioned writing for general audiences.
He co-leads a NICHE-funded research project evaluating interprofessional Student Schwartz Rounds in higher education, demonstrating his commitment to improving emotional support systems in academic and clinical training contexts.
