Joel Jacobsson serves as a University Lecturer within the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at Mid Sweden University in Sundsvall. His academic role centers on Political Science, where he investigates the intersection of democratic processes and public policy through multiple ongoing research initiatives.
His research focuses on democracy in educational institutions, examining school elections and political representative visits as democratic mechanisms through the SkolDem project. Concurrently, he analyzes local housing policy impacts on vulnerable populations, including migrants and socially excluded groups. Current projects include “A school in democracy?” studying Sundsvall school visits, and longitudinal analysis of Västernorrland’s 40-year integration network.
Recent publications reveal a strong emphasis on municipal governance, particularly his 2025 Journal of Public Policy systematic review analyzing how local housing decisions gatekeep vulnerable group settlement. This work demonstrates methodological rigor through policy briefs for Formas and working papers, highlighting practical applications for social inclusion policies.
Dr. Jacobsson maintains active collaborations with researchers including Gustav Lidén, Emma Holmqvist, and Karin Jutvik across public policy domains, contributing to both academic journals and policy-oriented publications through Mid Sweden University’s research channels.
