Joel Hollier

Dr Joel Hollier is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Qualitative Policy Research at the Discipline of Participation Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health, University of Sydney. He joined the Social Work and Policy Studies program in 2021 after completing his PhD, which explored the lived experiences of trauma for LGBTQIA+ individuals within traditional religious contexts.

Joel's research focuses on integrating holistic frameworks for youth development, mental health, and religiously mediated trauma, with a commitment to amplifying marginalized voices in LGBTQIA+ communities. His recent publications highlight intersections between Indigenous-Pacific perspectives, critical Whiteness studies, and queer resilience.

He co-founded the Ngaramadhi Health Space—a NSW Health and Department of Education initiative for youth at risk—and emphasizes social work approaches centered on whole-person practice. A grant from the Australian Research Theology Foundation Inc. in 2024 supports his work on religious trauma.
