Joel D. Boerckel is an Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on developmental mechanobiology and tissue regeneration strategies.
- Education: B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology
The Boerckel Laboratory investigates how mechanical cues influence skeletal development and regeneration. Current projects include mechanoregulation of vascular morphogenesis, osteocyte development, and endochondral bone repair, supported by NIH grants.
Recent publications highlight his work on YAP/TAZ transcriptional regulators in bone development and regeneration. Awards include multiple NIH grants and F1000 Prime recommendations.
- Current Ph.D. students: Madhura Nijsure, Yasaman Moharrer, Elizabeth Grace Seidl
The lab emphasizes diversity, inclusion, and interdisciplinary approaches combining bioengineering with developmental biology to address musculoskeletal diseases.
