Joel Crombez is an Associate Professor of Sociology in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice at Kennesaw State University. His academic journey includes a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Tennessee - Knoxville (2018), where he specialized in Political Economy and Theory. He has held previous academic appointments as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Grinnell College (2018-2019) and Graduate Teaching Associate at the University of Tennessee (2012-2018).
Dr. Crombez's research and teaching expertise span critical theory, political economy, technology, mental health, psychoanalysis, and the history of modernity/postmodernity. His work integrates interdisciplinary approaches to analyze societal anxiety, digital ontotheology, and sociocultural transformations through science fiction and theory. He has authored a book on critical socioanalysis and published peer-reviewed articles on topics such as AI's societal implications, Bourdieu's cross-national relevance, and the intersection of psychoanalysis with critical theory.
Notable fellowships include being a Global Fellow at the Center for the Study of Social Justice (2020-Present) and a Fellow at the Institute of Critical Social Inquiry (2017). His courses include foundational sociology, social theory, technology and society, and Afrofuturist sociology. Publications reflect his focus on critical socioanalysis, religious critique, and digital futures.
