Joel Belliveau is a Researcher in Residence at the Centre de recherche en civilisation canadienne-française (CRCCF) at the University of Ottawa. He specializes in the intellectual, cultural, and political history of 19th- and 20th-century Acadia, with additional expertise in Quebec's Quiet Revolution, Franco-Ontarian activism, and Catalan nationalism.
His research explores transnational connections between social movements, regional identity formation, and the intersection of cultural policy with political change. Recent projects include co-editing comparative studies on 1960s national movements and analyzing Franco communities' engagement with national holidays.
He previously held roles as a senior researcher at the Donald J. Savoie Institute and professor of history at the University of Moncton and Laurentian University. His current project investigates rural Acadian communities' post-war interethnic relations through oral histories.
Key publications include In the Spirit of '68 (2019) and co-edited volumes on global 1960s movements and francophone national holidays. His work bridges local Acadian experiences with broader transnational historical trends.
