Joel A. Spencer is an Associate Professor at the School of Engineering, University of California, Merced, specializing in the Bioengineering department. His research focuses on developing novel optical imaging and sensing systems for biomedical applications in tissue regeneration, transplantation, and cancer.

His lab (Spencer Lab for Advanced Microscopy) employs two-photon microscopy and fluorescence lifetime imaging to address complex biomedical questions. Publications span hematopoietic stem cell dynamics, vascular niche interactions, and metastasis tracking.
