Joe Saunders is a Research Fellow at St Mary's University, working on a UKRI-funded project examining the institution's historical evolution from a Catholic teacher education college to a modern university. He is concurrently pursuing a PhD at the University of York on the social history of the seventeenth-century English print trade. His research interests span English society from 1500 to the present, with a focus on community histories, labor practices, and communication networks. Saunders holds an MA (Hons) and MPhil in History from the University of Glasgow.
He teaches at the University of York’s Department of History and adult education organizations like Pharos Tutors, specializing in family and local history. Saunders is an associate of the Association of Genealogists and Researchers in Archives (AGRA), and hosts the Family History Federation’s podcast. He actively engages with public history through talks and workshops for organizations like the Society of Genealogists.
As vice-chair of the British Association for Local History, Saunders manages volunteer and staff operations for outreach programs. His freelance research since 2018 has served private clients, academics, and institutions, blending academic rigor with community engagement.
