Joe Pavelka, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Health and Physical Education at Mount Royal University. His research focuses on destination management, tourism marketing, and tourism motivation, with interdisciplinary work on resort community evolution and amenity migration. He has been teaching in the Ecotourism and Outdoor Leadership (ETOL) program since 2000, specializing in ecotourism courses, tourism marketing, expedition education, and international field schools.
Education: PhD in Geography (2010, University of Calgary), MA in Recreation Administration (1990, University of Alberta), Honours Bachelor of Outdoor Recreation (1987) and BA in Geography (1987), both from Lakehead University.
Teaching and Fieldwork: Leads ecotourism field schools to Peru, Belize, and Mexico, and organizes expeditions across Alberta, BC, Yukon, and the Northwest Territories. He emphasizes experiential education and holds certifications in wilderness first aid and canoeing.
Current Projects: Includes the 'Amenity Migration In The Bow Valley' video, Salkantay Trail documentation, and the 'Canoes For Peru' initiative, highlighted in a documentary trailer.
