Joe Cleary is the John M. Schiff Professor of English at Yale University, specializing in Irish modernism, postcolonial literature, and world literature systems. He holds a PhD from Columbia University (1997) and teaches courses on Irish revival, modernist novels, imperial writing, and Marxist cultural theory. Cleary convenes Yale's 'Left Literary Studies' graduate group and contributes to the Dublin Review of Books.
His research examines literature through frameworks of empire, globalization, and world-system theory. Recent work focuses on institutional histories of English departments, decolonization of curricula, and literary responses to capitalist crises.
Publications demonstrate sustained analysis of Ireland's position within global literary systems, with methodologies blending Marxist critique, postcolonial theory, and institutional analysis. Research contributes to debates about world literature paradigms and decolonial approaches to literary studies.
