Joe Burk is an Adjunct Professor of Education at Bethel University's Graduate School, specializing in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Teaching and Learning Certificate program. He has over 20 years of experience in science education, including teaching IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) Science and Diploma Program Biology. He also serves as a Senior Examiner for MYP Biology with the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), leading teams to author exams and evaluate submissions in English and French.
Education: B.A. in Animal Ecology (Iowa State University, 1996), M.A. in Natural Science and Environmental Education (Hamline University, 2006), Ph.D. in K-12 Leadership (Capella University, 2010).
Research interests include educational leadership, teacher performance evaluation, curriculum development for science education, and the implementation of alternative teacher compensation systems. His work bridges practical teaching methods with systemic reforms, as evident in his book analyzing Minnesota’s alternative pay plan system. He also contributes to pedagogical strategies, such as inquiry-based questioning techniques in science classrooms.
Professional involvement includes roles as a science department chair, union leader, and co-developer of an alternative pay plan for teachers. He founded Miracle Travel Works with his brothers to support families traveling for children’s medical care, raising over $250,000 to assist over 100 families.
In addition to his academic and professional contributions, Burk enjoys outdoor activities with his family, including camping, hiking, and rock climbing, reflecting his commitment to experiential learning and community engagement.
