Dr. Jodie Burton serves as a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Clinical Neurosciences at the University of Calgary, with a joint appointment in Community Health Sciences. She is a full member of the MS Research Program at the Hotchkiss Brain Institute and co-director of the Autologous Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Program for Multiple Sclerosis.
Her academic credentials include a BSc in Life Sciences (1996) and MD (2000) from the University of Toronto, followed by Neurology residency (2005), an MS fellowship (2005-2007), and an MSc in Clinical Epidemiology (2006-2008). Prior to Calgary (2009-present), she staffed the University of Toronto MS clinic (2007-2009).
Dr. Burton's research spans over 10 years with dual clinical-translational focus:
- Vitamin D's role in MS disease modulation and neuroprotection through active clinical trials
- Development of escalation protocols for aggressive MS and Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder
- Leadership in stem cell transplantation initiatives for treatment-resistant MS
As an educator, she supervises students across research settings and contributes to neurology resident training in evidence-based methodology. Her clinical leadership extends to the Foothills Medical Centre MS clinic (403.944.4253), where she implements research-driven treatment protocols.
The Autologous Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Program operates as a multidisciplinary hub under her co-direction, integrating immunology, neurology, and transplant medicine to advance MS therapeutics. This program represents a cornerstone of Calgary's specialized neuroimmunology services.
