Prof. Jochen Schiller serves as a Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Freie Universität Berlin's Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. He leads the Technical Information Technology Working Group and holds strategic roles including Board Member of the Einstein Center Digital Future, Advisory Board Member for the Competence Center for Critical Infrastructures, and Member of the Future Forum for Public Security.
His research centers on secure and resilient smart-home ecosystems, with emphasis on IoT device security, network disruption tolerance, and user convenience-power consumption trade-offs. Current investigations include firmware update automation across heterogeneous devices, robustness of smart smoke detectors under denial-of-service attacks, and quantitative metrics for user experience in networked environments. Methodologies integrate telematics principles with real-world critical infrastructure requirements.
Prof. Schiller actively supervises bachelor and master theses on smart-home security challenges through structured research frameworks. His work connects to major initiatives including SAFEST (security validation), RIOT (IoT operating systems), X-CHECK (infrastructure resilience), and ECDF-funded projects addressing public security through digital innovation. Lab environments feature the DES testbed for network disruption simulations and indoor localization systems for context-aware security applications.
