Jochen Mankart is currently the Head of Research at the Central Bank of Slovakia (NBS) since December 2024. He holds a Research Fellow position at the Institute of Economics, University of St. Gallen, alongside his previous role as Assistant Professor there from 2014–2019. His research focuses on macroeconomic phenomena such as incomplete markets, heterogeneous agent models, bankruptcy law, and sovereign debt dynamics. Mankart earned a Ph.D. in Economics from the London School of Economics (2009) and holds advanced degrees from the Institut für Weltwirtschaft Kiel and Freie Universität Berlin.
His academic career also includes leading the Bundesbank’s Research Focus Group on Banking and Finance (2018–2024) while on leave from the University of St. Gallen. Awards include the ASP Fellowship (2002–2003) and LSE Tutorial Fellowship (2007–2009). His refereeing activities span top journals like the Review of Economic Studies and Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control.
Mankart’s teaching encompasses advanced macroeconomics, computational economics, and financial market theory, reflecting his expertise in modeling heterogeneous agent behavior and policy analysis. His research often bridges theoretical frameworks with empirical data, addressing topics like fiscal multipliers, labor market dynamics, and sovereign risk.
