Joaquim Comas Matas is a Professor at the Department of Chemical, Agricultural and Food Technology Engineering of the University of Girona and leads the research line in modeling and decision support systems at the Catalan Institute for Water Research (ICRA). He is a member of the LEQUIA research group, part of the TECNIO ACC1Ó network under the Government of Catalonia.
- Licentiate in Chemistry (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 1993)
- Master in Environmental Technologies (University of Girona, 1995)
- PhD in Industrial Engineering (University of Girona, 2000)
His research focuses on:
- Advanced wastewater treatment and reuse systems using membrane technologies (e.g., MBR, reverse osmosis, nanofiltration)
- Microcontaminant removal in wastewater systems
- Life cycle assessment and water footprint analysis
- Multicriteria decision support systems for sustainable water management
- Artificial intelligence applications in urban water infrastructure
- Development of nature-based solutions for urban water circular economy (nutrient recovery, water reuse)
He has led 17 doctoral theses and participated in over 50 R&D projects, including EU-funded initiatives like SANITAS (FP7), EdiCitNet, and MULTISOURCE. He co-founded the spin-off SISLtech (2003) and holds a Spanish patent for MBR energy optimization and a European patent for MBR-to-OMBR upgrades.
- Early Career Research Excellence Award (2006)
