Joanne Tipper is a Professor and Associate Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at RMIT University's STEM College. She holds a PhD in skin microbiology and has pioneered methodologies for isolating wear particles from joint replacements over 30 years. Her work has contributed to international standards like ISO 17853 and ASTM F1877, and she co-led European pre-standards on nanoparticle isolation. Her research focuses on biomaterials, bioprinting for spinal cord repair, and neural stem cell responses to implant debris.
Research Interests: Biomaterials characterization, wear particle impacts, 3D bioprinting, and spinal implant biocompatibility. Her work bridges biomedical engineering and clinical applications, emphasizing regenerative medicine and implant durability.
Publications Trend: Recent articles emphasize wear particle detection (e.g., YOLOv9 applications), spinal disc mechanics, and hydrogel scaffolds for neural repair. This reflects her dual focus on material science and translational biomedical engineering.
Professional Roles: Previously Head of Biomedical Engineering at UTS (2018–2024) and Professor at the University of Leeds (2014–2018). She currently oversees academic strategy in RMIT's STEM College while maintaining research leadership.
