Joanne Jamie is an Associate Professor in the School of Natural Sciences at Macquarie University, specializing in Bioorganic and Medicinal Chemistry. Her research focuses on collaborative partnerships with Indigenous communities, particularly the Yaegl Elders, to document and scientifically validate traditional medicines and bush foods. She co-founded the National Indigenous Science Education Program (NISEP), which integrates Western and Indigenous science to enhance STEM education and inclusion for Indigenous youth. NISEP has received numerous awards, including the 2019 Eureka Prize for STEM Inclusion.
Her research spans three core areas: (1) bioactive compounds from Indigenous flora, (2) radiopharmaceutical design for disease diagnosis/treatment, and (3) STEM educational resource development. Key collaborations include the Cultural Immersion Program 'The River of Learning' and development of a bush medicine handbook for cultural tourism. Jamie also convenes Macquarie University's 'Engaging the Community in Science' course, linking students with STEM outreach programs.
Her projects include biosecurity initiatives (e.g., fruit fly attractants), nutritional studies of fresh produce, and investigations into lens protein chemistry related to cataracts. Jamie has secured 54 research projects and published 137 peer-reviewed papers, with an h-index of 27. Her work emphasizes ethical research practices, community capability strengthening, and bridging Indigenous and Western scientific knowledge systems.
