Joanna Yates is a PhD student and Sessional Tutor in English Literature at Keele University's School of Humanities. Her research focuses on eighteenth-century literature, particularly women poets and the philosophical works of Erasmus Darwin. She holds a BA in English Literature from the University of British Columbia (1998) and an MA in English Literature from Keele (2020).
Her current PhD project, funded by the AHRC, examines Erasmus Darwin's Temple of Nature in collaboration with Erasmus Darwin House and the Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum. Supervised by Professors David Amigoni and Nicholas Seager, this work explores Darwin's literary and cultural legacy through social and intellectual contexts of the period.
Teaching roles include sessional instruction for ENG-20088: Ways of Reading. She actively participates in academic service, convening the HUMSS Reading Group since 2023 and serving as EDI Student Representative for Keele's NWCDTP. Awards include the Thomas Keymer Award (BSECS) and accolades for her MA dissertation and overall postgraduate performance.
Collaborations include an NWCDTP-funded engagement project with Erasmus Darwin House (EDD August 2025) and editorial work for UnderConstruction. Professional affiliations include the British Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies (BSECS).
