Joanna Redden is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Information & Media Studies, Western University, and Co-Director of the Data Justice Lab. Her research focuses on the datafication of governance, exploring how automated systems impact democratic processes and social justice. She has held fellowships at Ryerson University’s Infoscape Centre and Goldsmiths Leverhulme Media Research Centre, and previously served as a Senior Lecturer at Cardiff University and Assistant Professor at the University of Calgary.
Her work bridges academia and practice, examining themes like predictive analytics in child welfare, data-driven governance, and the societal implications of algorithmic systems. Key publications include Data Justice (Sage, 2022) and contributions to journals such as Big Data & Society and Scientific American. Her research is funded by organizations like the Open Society Foundations and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
Redden’s interdisciplinary approach integrates political science, sociology, and technology ethics, emphasizing equity and accountability in data systems. Ongoing projects address automated public services, data harms, and citizen participation in datafied societies.
