Joanna Czernichowska

Dr. hab. Joanna Czernichowska serves as University Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw within the Faculty of Conservation and Restoration of Works of Art. She has held leadership positions including Head of the Studio of Conservation and Restoration of Easel Painting on Movable Supports (since 2016) and former Head of the Department of Conservation and Restoration of Easel Painting on Movable Supports and Polychrome Wooden Sculpture (2008-2020), while currently serving on the Program Council of the Faculty of Culture and Social Sciences.

Her academic journey began with a Master of Arts in Conservation of Paintings and Wooden Polychrome Sculptures from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw (1984), followed by PhD completion in 1999 and habilitation in 2013. She progressed from assistant (1989-1999) to assistant professor (2000-2013) before attaining her professorship.

Professor Czernichowska specializes in conservation methodologies for easel paintings, polychrome wooden sculptures, and modern/contemporary artworks. Her research integrates archaeological and ethnographic monument preservation, demonstrated through extensive conservation projects for Poland's premier cultural institutions including the National Museums network, Emanuel Ringelblum Jewish Historical Institute, Royal Łazienki Museum, and Diocesan Museum in Sandomierz.

She has supervised Master's theses and doctoral dissertations while providing mentorship through the Gaude Polonia Scholarship Program (2015, 2016, 2018, 2019). Academic governance roles include membership on the Faculty Council (2000-2019), Senate (2017-2020), and Program Council (since 2020).

Professor Czernichowska collaborates extensively with the Inter-Cathedral Workshop for Conservation of Archaeological and Ethnographic Monuments (2016-2020) and Inter-Cathedral Studio "Novum" for Modern and Contemporary Art, where she leads conservation-restoration projects requiring integrated research documentation for diverse collections ranging from private holdings like Jan Tarasin's 33 paintings to institutional sets including the Żerań Power Plant artwork and Foksal Gallery collections.
