Joana Pinho

Joana Pinho is an Associate Professor at Católica Porto Business School (CPBS), Universidade Católica Portuguesa, and an Integrated Researcher at the Research Centre in Management and Economics (CEGE). She leads the 'Markets&Policy' research group at CEGE and serves on the Scientific Council of CPBS.

Her educational background includes:

• Bachelor's in Applied Mathematics, Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade do Porto (2003–2007)
• PhD in Economics, Faculdade de Economia da Universidade do Porto (2007–2011)

Her research focuses on industrial organization and competition policy, with growing emphasis on digital economics and its regulatory challenges. She employs experimental and theoretical methods to study firm behavior, market design, and antitrust effectiveness. Her work bridges economic theory with real-world policy applications, particularly in digital and energy markets.

The most recent publications reflect a strong trend in experimental economics and empirical industrial organization, analyzing collusion, vertical differentiation, cost structures, and antitrust impacts. These works are published in leading journals such as the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization and Review of Industrial Organization.

She has been involved in multiple national and international funded research projects, contributing to policy-relevant studies in competition and market regulation.

Joana Pinho has served as a consultant for public and private entities on competition policy, digital markets, and energy regulation, demonstrating the applied impact of her research.

She was an Assistant Professor at CPBS from 2017 to 2024 and was promoted to Associate Professor in March 2024. Prior to that, she held postdoctoral positions at the University of Vigo, University of Porto, and Toulouse School of Economics, supported by FCT grants.
