Joan Steigerwald is a Professor in the Department of Humanities at York University, with affiliations in the Graduate Programs of Humanities, Science and Technology Studies, and Social and Political Thought. Her research focuses on the history of the life sciences, environmental history, German idealism and romanticism, and science and technology studies. She holds a PhD from King’s College London and advanced degrees from the University of Manitoba.
Her recent book, Experimenting at the Boundaries of Life, explores the emergence of biology as a science in early 19th-century Germany, examining how experimental investigations of organic vitality shaped understandings of life. Her current SSHRC-funded project, A Romantic Natural History, re-centers material entities in historical narratives, analyzing their role in cultural and epistemic transformations during the Romantic period.
Steigerwald’s work bridges philosophy, history, and science studies, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to historical and cultural questions. She has held grants including a SSHRC Insight Grant (2022–2027).
