Joan Mahoney is a Lecturer at Southampton Law School, University of Southampton, since 2016. Her academic focus spans Public Law, Family Law, and Legal History, with particular emphasis on reproductive technology and British/US Constitutional Law. She serves as Programme Lead for the Juris Doctor (JD) and Accelerated Students, supervises dissertations, and provides personal academic tutoring.

Her research explores intersections between law, history, and societal structures. Current projects include a comparative study of parenting concepts in the UK and US and a second book analyzing civil liberties restrictions during the Cold War. Key publication themes include constitutional law, legal history, and bioethics, with notable works on Cold War security law (2020) and Korean War civil liberties (2018).
Previously, she practiced law in the US for four years before transitioning to academia, holding teaching and deanship roles at four American law schools. She has authored approximately thirty articles and book chapters on constitutional law, reproductive technology, and legal history.
