Joan E. DeBello is a Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science and Chair of the Division of Computer Science, Mathematics, and Science at St. John’s University’s Collins College of Professional Studies. She holds a Doctorate from Columbia University and has extensive teaching experience in mathematics (e.g., Calculus, Statistics) and computer science (e.g., Java, C++, Data Structures). Her research focuses on increasing diversity in STEM, Mathematics in Sports, IoT, and ethical AI. She actively contributes to academic governance and professional organizations.
- Education: Doctorate from Columbia University
Research & Engagement: Leads initiatives to support women and under-represented groups in CS/math, explores technology for classroom management, and develops curricula in computational mathematics. Moderates the St. John’s ACM Student Chapter and serves as Vice Chairperson of the NY Metro ACM Chapter. Previously chaired Education for the ACM NY Metro Chapter.
Awards: Recognized as a former CTL Fellow.
Teaching & Service: Coordinates the Clare Boothe Luce Program and teaches courses like Java programming and Discrete Mathematics. Engages in grant writing and promotes service learning in CS education.
