Joachim Kurtz is a Professor of Biology (Zoology) at the University of Münster, leading the Animal Evolutionary Ecology group. He holds roles including Vice Spokesperson of DFG CRC-TRR 212 and Spokesperson of DFG RTG 2220. His research focuses on host-parasite coevolution, immune system evolution, and niche construction. He completed his Dr. rer. nat. at the University of Bonn and has held positions at institutions like ETH Zurich and the Max Planck Institute for Limnology.
His research interests span evolutionary ecology, immunology, and the interplay between hosts and pathogens. Notable projects include investigating the genomic basis of evolutionary innovations and the role of epigenetic regulation in beetles. He has supervised over 20 doctoral students and contributed to numerous collaborative grants, including DFG-funded initiatives.
Kurtz has authored over 150 publications, with recent work exploring niche construction's impact on resistance evolution and immune memory mechanisms. His awards include the 2009 Goldener Hans and a 2006 fellowship from the Institute of Advanced Study. He serves on editorial boards for Frontiers in Immunology and Experimental Parasitology.
