JoAnn Staten is a Researcher and grant writer at Otis College of Art and Design, focusing on women’s issues, identity narratives, and health disparities. She currently serves as Assistant Chair in the Liberal Arts and Sciences division, where she develops interdisciplinary courses that bridge creative practices with real-world problem-solving.

Research & Projects
JoAnn’s work explores the intersection of art, public health, and marginalized communities. Her HIV/AIDS awareness projects in Suriname utilized traditional textile crafts in the Akoti Kuutu Pangi Exhibition (2004) and media series like Suma Na Yu (2008), a Global Fund initiative targeting the Maroon community. She also co-developed a UNICEF video on birth registration in Suriname (2006–2007).
Teaching & Collaborations
She co-teaches the Made for Kids Malawi class, which partners with the Jacaranda School in Malawi. Students engage in art collaborations and travel to Malawi post-graduation. She has facilitated student interviews and exhibitions like the LAS Exhibition Space (2021–present) with student collaborators.
