Dr. Jo Iacovides is a Senior Lecturer in Human Computer Interaction at the University of York's Department of Computer Science. Her research focuses on games and playful technologies for applied purposes, including education, citizen science, and wellbeing. She explores learning, reflection, and complex player experiences within gaming contexts, with notable work on games' role in coping with life challenges and post-work recovery. Dr. Iacovides holds a PhD in Educational Technology from The Open University and has held academic roles at UCL, The Open University, and the University of Bath before joining York. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2021) and actively contributes to departmental roles such as Research Progression Panel membership.
Her qualifications include a PhD (2012), MRes (2008), MSc (2005), and BA (2004). Professional experience spans research and teaching roles, including a Research Associate position at UCLIC and a Research Officer role at the University of Bath. Her work bridges HCI, educational technology, and healthcare, emphasizing ethical AI integration and clinical decision-making support.
Dr. Iacovides' research highlights include designing frameworks for reflective play, analyzing gaming's psychological impacts during crises, and addressing AI risks in clinical settings. She collaborates on interdisciplinary projects such as the Resilience Challenge game and citizen science platforms like MOODs.
