Jiyul Chang is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science at South Dakota State University (SDSU). He holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Agronomy from SDSU (2002 and 1997, respectively), and a B.S. in Biology from Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea (1988).
His research focuses on geospatial analysis using GIS, remote sensing for crop and nutrient management, precision agriculture techniques, and soil health dynamics. Specific interests include quantifying greenhouse gas emissions in grazing fields and biochar-treated soils, optimizing nutrient management zones, and improving water/nutrient use efficiency in cropping systems.
He teaches courses such as Agricultural Computations (PS/HO 285), Precision Ag Data Mapping (PRAG 427/527), and Crop Management with Precision Farming Lab (PRAG 440L/540L). He serves on the Scholarship and Curriculum committees within the department.
Chang has received grants including a $39,000 project from Syngenta (2012-2013) for advanced remote sensing in crop field mapping. His work emphasizes practical applications of technology in sustainable agricultural practices.
He is located at the Raven Precision Agriculture Center, Room 102, and affiliated with the Raven Precision Ag Building.
