Jin Woo Jang is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), South Korea, holding this position since March 2025 after serving as Assistant Professor from August 2021 to February 2025.
His academic background includes a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania (2016) under advisor Robert M. Strain and a B.A. in Mathematics from Columbia University (2011).
Dr. Jang specializes in the mathematical analysis of partial differential equations arising from physical phenomena, with core expertise in kinetic theory. His research rigorously investigates derivation of kinetic equations via scaling limits, existence/uniqueness of solutions, regularity, large-time asymptotics, and stability of steady states. He focuses on physically motivated models including Boltzmann and Landau equations (Newtonian/relativistic frameworks), Vlasov-Maxwell systems for collisionless plasmas, and kinetic radiative transfer equations, with significant contributions to hydrodynamic limits and cross-equation scaling justifications.
He actively shapes the academic community through co-organizing the POSTECH PDE and Applied Analysis Seminar and leading major international events like the 2026 International Conference on Kinetic Theory and Related Fields (Seoul) and the 2026 PDE Winter School (Pohang), alongside numerous special sessions at KSIAM and KMS meetings.
