Jim Zaczek serves as Professor in the Department of Forestry within the College of Agricultural Sciences at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He teaches core courses including Ecology of North American Forests, Forest Ecosystems, Tree Physiology, and Professional Preparation in Forestry, maintaining strong connections to his alma mater as a Saluki Forestry alumnus.
His educational foundation includes a Ph.D. in Forest Resources from Pennsylvania State University (1991-1994), M.S. in Forestry with Forest Genetics concentration from SIUC (1980-1982), B.S. in Forestry with Resource Management specialization from SIUC (1977-1980), and foundational studies in Forest Biology at Colorado State University (1975-1977).
Dr. Zaczek's research program centers on restoration ecology of native ecosystems, with particular emphasis on giant cane (Arundinaria gigantea) habitat restoration, oak forest regeneration, and propagation of recalcitrant woody plants. His work integrates tree physiology, forest genetics, and stand dynamics to address critical challenges in hardwood forest ecosystem management and wetland restoration. Current investigations focus on canebrake development, ontogenetic changes in trees, and sustainable propagation techniques for native species.
Analysis of his 46 peer-reviewed publications reveals consistent focus on ecological restoration methodologies, particularly concerning native bamboo ecosystems. His research demonstrates interdisciplinary integration of soil science, hydrology, and plant physiology to develop practical restoration techniques. Key trends include innovative propagation methods for challenging species, quantification of ecosystem services provided by riparian buffers, and examination of disturbance impacts on forest regeneration.
His scientific recognition includes:
- Honorary State FFA Degree for meritorious service to agricultural education
- Outstanding Alumnus by the Department of Forestry, SIUC
- Outstanding Recent Alumnus by Penn State School of Forest Resources
- Donald M. Elkins Excellence in Education Award
Dr. Zaczek has served on over 60 graduate student committees and secured $8.9 million in research funding from 54 contracts as of 2020. His current McIntire-Stennis Cooperative Forestry Research Grant project (2019-2023) investigates native bamboo management for nursery sustainability, lakeshore conservation, and habitat restoration. He maintains active professional engagement through 37+ invited talks and 200+ conference presentations.
His research operations are centered in field sites across southern Illinois wetlands and forests, with laboratory work conducted in the Agriculture Building at SIUC. Current projects involve collaborative teams examining sediment dynamics, water quality impacts, and native species propagation techniques for ecosystem restoration.
