Professor Sir Jim McDonald is the Principal & Vice-Chancellor of the University of Strathclyde since 2009. Previously, he held the Rolls-Royce Chair in Electrical Power Systems (1993–2009), served as Head of the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering (2003–2006), and Deputy Principal for Research and Knowledge Exchange (2006–2009). He is an internationally recognized leader in engineering, energy policy, and academic administration.
Education: BSc, MSc, and PhD in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, and Energy Economics from the University of Strathclyde.
Research interests include energy systems, sustainable engineering, and policy integration with technical innovation. He co-chairs the Scottish Government’s Energy Advisory Board and chairs pan-Scotland research pools in Energy and Engineering. His advisory roles span government boards, industry (e.g., ScottishPower, UK Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult), and non-profits like the Glasgow Science Centre.
- Awards: Knight Bachelor (2012), Knight Grand Cross (2023), and multiple fellowships in engineering institutions.
- Leadership: President of the Royal Academy of Engineering (2019–2024), first Scottish holder of the role.
He actively promotes interdisciplinary research, industry-academia collaboration, and Scotland’s energy transition agenda.
