Jim Killarney is an Assistant Professor at the School of Arts & Sciences, Colby-Sawyer College. His work centers on water quality, specifically how chemical pollutants affect ecosystems and public health.
His research spans environmental chemistry, ecotoxicology, and analytical methods. Key projects involve microplastic contamination in freshwater systems, lead exposure in waterfowl, and drone-based water quality monitoring. He also pioneered fluorescence spectroscopy and chemometric tools to detect pharmaceutical pollutants in water.
Recent publications highlight his focus on copper-based chemical sensors and coordination polymers, integrating environmental monitoring with materials science. These studies emphasize structural analysis, luminescence properties, and innovative detection methods.
Jim has secured research funding from the Maine Technology Institute, Up East Foundation, NASA Maine Space Grant Consortium, and the State of Maine Department of Environmental Protection.
