Jim Hollan is a Distinguished Professor at the University of California, San Diego, with joint appointments in the Department of Cognitive Science and Computer Science. He co-founded the Distributed Cognition and HCI Lab and the UC San Diego Design Lab, where his research explores the cognitive consequences of computational media. His work sits at the intersection of cognitive design, distributed cognition, human-computer interaction, and multimodal interaction.
His research involves developing theory and methods, designing representations, implementing prototypes, and evaluating their effectiveness in various domains. Current projects are funded by NSF and Microsoft Research, focusing on dynamic interactive adaptive systems that adapt to task structure, activity history, and social context.
Recent publications demonstrate his focus on visualization psychology, qualitative analysis of audiovisual data, and computational notebooks. These works consistently emphasize human-centered design, cognitive aspects of technology use, and interdisciplinary approaches to complex problems.
- ACM SIGCHI Lifetime Research Award (2015)
- ACM SIGCHI Academy (2003)
Dr. Hollan has mentored over 30 PhD students in cognitive science and computer science, with alumni now at institutions like Cisco, Google, UC Irvine, and MIT. His lab maintains collaborations with international researchers and industry partners to advance interface design and cognitive technologies.
