Jim Hefferon is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Vermont (UVM). He holds a PhD in Mathematics (Recursion Theory) from the University of Connecticut (1986), an MS in Mathematics (1983), and a BS in Secondary Education and Mathematics (1980). Before joining UVM in 2023, he spent most of his career at St. Michael's College. His expertise lies in the Theory of Computation and the creation of Free textbooks, including seminal works on Linear Algebra, Theory of Computation, and Inquiry-Based Proofs. He is the recipient of the 2020 MAA Solow Author's Award for his impact on undergraduate education.
Education: PhD 1986 (UConn), MS 1983, BS 1980. Courses taught include Foundations of Calculus, Calculus I/II, and Theory of Computation. His textbooks are widely adopted globally and emphasize open access. He also maintains active contributions to LaTeX and open-source educational materials.
