Jim Detert is the John L. Colley Professor of Business Administration at the University of Virginia's Darden Graduate School of Business Administration and a Professor of Public Policy at the Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy. His expertise spans leadership development, workplace courage, ethical decision-making, and employee voice, with a focus on global high-technology and service-oriented industries as well as public sector institutions.

Scientific awards for his work include the Personnel Psychology Best Article Finalist (2012) and Academy of Management Journal Best Article Award (2012). His book Choosing Courage: The Everyday Guide to Being Brave at Work (2021) synthesizes two decades of research into actionable guidance for individuals and institutions.
Detert has designed leadership and ethics curricula taught globally, including Darden's Defining Moments Curriculum, which helps professionals navigate high-stakes decisions. He also developed the Workplace Courage Acts Index (WCAI), a tool to assess courageous behavior in organizations. His consulting focuses on structural and symbolic change for senior leadership teams and experiential learning to build confidence in ethical actions.
