Dr. Jim Coykendall is Professor in the Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at Clemson University's College of Science. He serves as Managing Editor of the Journal of Commutative Algebra and specializes in commutative algebra, factorization theory, and algebraic structures.
Research includes:
- Generalizations of unique factorization domains
- Monoid algebras and atomicity
- Ideal graph theory
- Extensions of algebraic number fields
Honors include:
- Carnegie Foundation U.S. Professor of the Year (North Dakota, 2005)
- E. T. Bell Prize for undergraduate research
- Multiple teaching awards from Cornell and NDSU
He directs the Clemson Calculus Challenge and Math Club, with extensive PhD student mentorship in factorization theory.
