Jill Gemmill is a Research Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Clemson University. She has served since 2007 as Executive Director reporting to the CIO and Vice Provost for Information Technology, leading initiatives that integrate domain expertise with cyberinfrastructure to advance research, teaching, and service.
Her educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Computer and Information Sciences, University of Alabama at Birmingham (2006)
- MSEE in Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Alabama at Birmingham (2001)
- M.S. in Computer and Information Sciences, University of Alabama at Birmingham (1984)
- B.A. in American History, Antioch College
Her research centers on virtual organizations and secure collaborative environments with applications across social science, health sciences, computational science, bioinformatics, and ecology. She specializes in federated identity management, distributed authentication systems, network performance analysis, and integration of visualization with computational workflows using reusable research data.
Dr. Gemmill has secured over $5 million through 9 federally funded grants as PI or co-PI from NSF, NIH, NLM, SURA, SCRA, and UAB Health Services Foundation. She established the ITU H.350/IETF RFC 3944 industry standard for directory-video conferencing integration and pioneered Shibboleth-based grid authentication with NCSA.
Key projects include the myVocs collaboration environment, Marine Genomics Bioinformatics Portal, Intelligent River initiative, Research Affiliate Identity Provider (RAIdP), and Open Parks Grid.
