Jiawei (Joe) Zhou is an Assistant Professor at Stony Brook University, holding joint appointments in the Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics and the Department of Computer Science. His research focuses on Natural Language Processing (NLP), Machine Learning (ML), generative models, and multimodal AI. Prior to joining Stony Brook in 2024, he was a Research Assistant Professor at Toyota Technological Institute at Chicago (TTIC), affiliated with the University of Chicago.
Dr. Zhou earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Harvard University, where he was advised by Professor Alexander (Sasha) Rush and worked with Professor Minlan Yu on ML applications in networks and cybersecurity. He also holds an M.A. in Statistics from Harvard and a B.S. in Electronic Engineering from Tsinghua University.
His research explores improving state-of-the-art models like Large Language Models (LLMs) in areas such as efficiency, knowledge representation, memorization, security, and reasoning. He has been recognized with the ACL 2022 Outstanding Paper Award. In 2024, he delivered a research seminar on generative models at Stony Brook's CS department.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on Natural Language Processing and Frontiers in Large Language Models. He maintains an online project tracking advancements in LLM + Reinforcement Learning (RL), reflecting his recent focus on unlocking new capabilities for LLMs through RL integration.
