Dr. Jiansheng Xiang is a Research Fellow in the Department of Earth Science and Engineering at Imperial College London, part of the Faculty of Engineering. He holds affiliations with the Applied Modelling and Computation Group, NORMS, and the Virtual Geoscience Workbench. Previously, he served as a Research Associate at Imperial College (2006–2010) and a Research Fellow at the University of Leeds (2004–2006). He earned a PhD in Physical Science from Glasgow Caledonian University (2004), and MSc and BSc in Thermal Engineering from Chongqing University (1997 and 1994).
His research focuses on interdisciplinary areas including Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Resources Engineering, Geology, and Oceanography. Key themes involve rock fragmentation mechanics, fluid-solid interaction modeling, numerical simulation of drilling processes, and geothermal energy systems.
Teaching contributions include supervising 8 PhD and over 20 Master’s students, organizing training courses on fluid/solid modeling at institutions like Tsinghua University and Zhejiang University, and providing academic support to international students. His work integrates computational methods (e.g., FDEM, DG-FEM) with real-world applications in geomechanics, energy systems, and environmental engineering.
- Key Projects: Horizon 2020 SURE project (water jet drilling modeling), geothermal drilling intensifier design, rubble mound stability simulations.
- Labs/Teams: Solidity Project, Virtual Geoscience Workbench (VGW), NORMS group.
