Dr. Jianglong Zhu is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at the University of Toledo, within the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. His research focuses on developing novel synthetic methodologies for carbohydrate chemistry, with particular emphasis on glycosylation techniques and the synthesis of complex oligosaccharides and glycoconjugates.
Dr. Zhu's research interests center on carbohydrate chemistry and synthetic methodology development. He has made significant contributions to the field of stereoselective glycosylation, particularly through anomeric O-alkylation techniques and gold-catalyzed glycosylation methods. His work has applications in synthesizing bacterial carbohydrate antigens for vaccine development, antitumor antibiotics, and complex glycans found in biological systems. His research bridges organic chemistry, chemical biology, and medicinal chemistry, with implications for understanding and treating diseases including cancer.
Analysis of Dr. Zhu's publication record reveals a strong focus on developing innovative methods for constructing challenging glycosidic linkages, particularly β-mannosidic bonds which are notoriously difficult to form. His work spans from fundamental methodology development to applications in synthesizing biologically relevant carbohydrate structures including bacterial antigens, tumor-associated carbohydrate antigens, and complex natural products. Recent work has emphasized cationic gold(I)-catalyzed glycosylation and cesium carbonate-mediated anomeric alkylation techniques.
