Professor Jianfu Shao is an active faculty member at the University of Lille, currently serving as an Exceptional Class Professor of Civil Engineering. He leads the Geomechanics research team (GEOM) and has held multiple institutional leadership roles including Director of the Laboratory of Mechanics of Lille (UMR8107) and French Dean of the Hohai-Lille College (joint France-China Institute of engineering).
- PhD in Civil Engineering (1987, University of Lille)
- Habilitation to supervise research (HDR) in Civil Engineering (1992, University of Lille)
- Master in Solid Mechanics (1984, University of Lille)
- Bachelor in Hydraulic Engineering (1982, China Agricultural University)
His research focuses on mechanics of geomaterials through experimental and numerical approaches, covering multi-scale modeling, THM-C coupling processes, and continuous/discontinuous numerical methods. He has led major industrial collaborations with ANDRA and TOTAL on applications ranging from radioactive waste disposal to shale gas production. His recent work trends in rock mechanics, plasticity, and interface mechanics between claystone and concrete.
- 2023 Senior member of Institut Universitaire de France
- 2022 Chandrakant S. Desai Medal (IACMAG)
- 2022 Maurice A. Biot Medal (ASCE)
- 2006 Changjiang Scholarship Chair Professor
Professor Shao has supervised 58 completed PhD theses and 25 post-doctoral researchers, with many of his former students now holding academic positions worldwide. He has served as principal investigator for numerous high-profile projects including ERC-funded MULTIFRAC, EU's CEBAMA, and China's State Key R&D initiatives on slope stability and landslides. His laboratory (UMR 9013) specializes in multi-physics and multi-scale mechanical behaviors of materials.
