Jessika Trancik is the Atlantic Richfield CD Associate Professor of Energy Studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Institute for Data, Systems, and Society (IDSS). She leads the Trancik Lab, which builds data-informed models to evaluate the economic and environmental impacts of energy technologies over time and space, with the goal of accelerating clean energy development by informing decisions made by engineers, policymakers, and private investors.
Professor Trancik's research spans multiple critical areas in energy and climate change. Her work investigates the determinants of technology improvement, asking why some technologies evolve more rapidly than others. She develops methods to assess the risks and scalability of new energy technologies, particularly examining how risks change with production scale. Her research on photovoltaics design optimization has contributed to understanding cost reduction patterns in solar energy. She also examines the climate change mitigation potential of various energy technologies, translating high-level climate targets into practical performance metrics for technology developers. Her group has identified key patterns in energy consumption that inform storage technology requirements for renewable integration and has developed frameworks for evaluating transportation technologies against climate policy targets.
Her research output shows a strong focus on quantitative analysis of energy systems with applications across multiple sectors. Early work established theoretical foundations for understanding technology improvement rates, while more recent publications address urgent climate challenges including electric vehicle adoption, storage requirements for renewables, and dynamic environmental impacts of technologies. Her work consistently bridges theoretical insights with practical applications for policymakers and industry.

Professor Trancik advises several graduate and undergraduate researchers in the Trancik Lab, including PhD student Nicholas Maurer and undergraduate researcher Lauren Aguilar. Her lab members regularly present their work at major conferences such as INFORMS and ISSST. Current research projects include evaluating technology improvement determinants, analyzing energy efficiency through personalized incentives (the Tripod project), assessing storage technology value, examining dynamic environmental impacts, studying risks and scalability of new technologies, optimizing PV design, and evaluating climate change mitigation potential of energy technologies. The lab has developed tools like TripEnergy for estimating personal vehicle energy consumption given limited travel data.
The Trancik Lab brings together interdisciplinary researchers to tackle complex energy challenges through rigorous quantitative methods. Professor Trancik is an active science communicator, frequently engaging with major media outlets including Vox, NPR, BBC, and The Wall Street Journal to discuss energy and climate issues, with recent appearances through April 2025 on topics ranging from AI-driven data center energy demand to green hydrogen potential in Texas.
