Jessie Munton is an Associate Professor in Philosophy at the University of Cambridge and a fellow at St John's College, where she serves as Director of Studies for Philosophy.
Her academic background includes:
- PhD in Philosophy from Yale University
- BPhil in Philosophy from Oxford University
- BA in Classics and Philosophy from Oxford University
Munton's research centers on philosophy of mind, epistemology, and philosophy of psychology, with significant contributions to what she terms 'negative epistemology' - examining ignorance, forgetting, and failures to inquire. Her work on attention and salience earned her a Leverhulme Research Fellowship (2022-2023) for a book under contract with Oxford University Press. She also investigates philosophy of perception (including her current work on visual objects as 'bundles of modal properties') and explores nuanced questions about bias - when it constitutes problematic cognition versus legitimate learning from experience.
Her significant awards include:
- Philip Leverhulme Prize (2023) for her work on philosophical aspects of forgetting
- Leverhulme Research Fellowship (2022-2023)
Munton values collaborative philosophical inquiry and is currently developing a collection of essays for non-specialist audiences on love and autonomy, represented by Lizzy Kremer at David Higham Associates. She encourages dialogue with others working on related philosophical questions.
