Jessie Dunbar is an Associate Professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, with a secondary appointment as Assistant Professor in African American Studies. Her research focuses on African American and African Diasporic literatures from the 19th and 20th centuries, with a unique comparative lens on Russian and AfroCuban cultural intersections.

Dr. Dunbar's current book project Democracy, Diaspora, and Disillusionment: Black Itinerancy and the Propaganda Wars challenges conventional timelines by tracing Russian ideological influence on African American politics back to the 19th century. She has published in Multiethnic Literature of the US, Interdisciplinary Literary Studies, and contributed chapters to Critical Insights: Civil Rights Literature and Routledge Companion to American Literary Journalism.
