Jessie Buettel serves as a Research Fellow at the Fenner School of Environment & Society, Australian National University (ANU), affiliated with Sustainable Farms. Her work pioneers cost-effective biodiversity monitoring solutions across natural and human-altered landscapes using cutting-edge technologies.
Her research spans forest and wildlife ecology with emphasis on ecological responses to global change. She deploys acoustic recorders, drones, and environmental DNA (eDNA) for large-scale monitoring while developing novel statistical methods and AI tools like the Mega-Efficient Wildlife Image Classifier (MEWC) to decode complex ecological patterns. Field projects include wildlife monitoring across Tasmania and Victoria, and fire impact studies on cultural sites in GunaiKurnai Country (East Gippsland).
Current initiatives integrate Indigenous knowledge with satellite technology for fuel moisture sensing in fire management. Her methodology bridges technological innovation with conservation practice, focusing on species distributions, habitat selection, and long-term ecological network design to address urgent biodiversity challenges.
