Jessica van Wonderen is a Senior Research Fellow in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of East Anglia, specializing in biochemistry and biophysics with a focus on electron transfer mechanisms in proteins. Her research explores multiheme cytochromes, microbial systems, and biomolecular engineering for applications in biohybrid technologies. She leads collaborative projects funded by the Royal Society of Chemistry and Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, including 'Bespoke Biomolecular Wires for Semi-Artificial Photosynthesis' (2022–2023) and 'Biohybrids for Solar Fuels' (2019–2021).
Her research interests center on understanding electron transport pathways in proteins, particularly in Shewanella species, and developing bioengineered systems for energy applications. Key themes include genetic code expansion, protein functionalization, and the structural dynamics of outer membrane proteins. Recent work has addressed heme array conductance, post-translational modifications, and the design of bioelectronic junctions.
Van Wonderen has contributed to over 30 peer-reviewed articles and 5 datasets, including work on nanosecond electron transfer rates and protein-based photocatalysis. She collaborates internationally on projects spanning microbial physiology, synthetic biology, and materials science.
