Jessica Spence serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesia at McMaster University, Faculty of Health Sciences. Her clinical and research focus lies in perioperative medicine, with a specialization in cardiac anesthesia and outcomes research. She is an active investigator in several large international studies including the VISION cohort and the POISE-3 randomized controlled trial.
Her primary research interests include postoperative delirium, particularly in cardiac surgery patients, and postoperative atrial fibrillation. She also investigates blood pressure management during cardiac surgery, myocardial injury after noncardiac surgery, and the impact of anesthesia techniques on patient outcomes. Her work often employs systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and large cohort studies.
Recent publications reveal a strong emphasis on delirium prevention strategies, such as the Benzodiazepine-Free Cardiac Anesthesia (B-Free) trial, and risk prediction using polygenic risk scores. Her research spans clinical trials, observational studies, and methodological work in perioperative medicine.
Dr. Spence has been involved in significant research initiatives including the VISION study, which examines vascular events in noncardiac surgery, and the POISE-3 trial, which tests strategies to minimize hypotension and use of tranexamic acid. She has also contributed to understanding gender disparities in cardiovascular research funding through CIHR.
