Jessica Massonnie is a Lecturer at the University of Portsmouth’s Centre for Interaction, Development and Diversity. She holds academic leadership roles as Course Leader for the Professional Doctorate in Education and Module Coordinator for courses in educational research and child mental health. Her work focuses on participatory, school-based research examining how children perceive classroom environments, with a particular interest in sensory needs, noise impacts, and evidence-based educational practices.
Education: PhD in Psychological Sciences (Birkbeck University of London, 2020), Research Master in Cognitive Sciences (Paris), and undergraduate studies in Child Development at University Paris Ouest.
Research collaborations include the COST Action (European brain development studies) and the Action Against Stunting Hub (multi-disciplinary child development interventions in low-resource settings). She co-leads projects such as a sensory audit tool for primary schools and a qualitative study on teachers’ perceptions of classroom evidence. Her work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to education and child well-being.
Grants include TRIF funding for sensory adaptation tools and FHSS support for teacher evidence frameworks. She supervises doctoral researchers in education and psychology, including James Baggott (ESRC-funded PhD on classroom noise and autism). Awards include Birkbeck’s Early Career Public Engagement Award (2019).
