Jessica Halliday Hardie is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Hunter College and the CUNY Graduate Center. She is affiliated with the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute and the CUNY Institute for Demographic Research. Hardie earned her PhD in Sociology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Pennsylvania State University. Her research focuses on inequality, family dynamics, health, education, and the transition to adulthood, particularly how class, race, and gender shape youth trajectories.
Her work spans qualitative and quantitative studies, including research on adolescent social capital, maternal health impacts on child wellbeing, and the interplay between economic stress and relationship quality. She is the author of Best Laid Plans: Women Coming of Age in Uncertain Times (2022) and has published in journals such as Social Forces and Journal of Marriage and Family.
Hardie teaches courses on sociology, statistics, and family studies at both Hunter College and the Graduate Center. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges demography, education policy, and social inequality. She holds a BA from Wellesley College and a teaching certification from Pace University, with prior experience as a NYC Teaching Fellow (2002–2004).
