Dr. Jessica Grahn is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at Western University, London, Ontario, with an appointment at the Brain and Mind Institute. She leads the Music and Neuroscience Lab, which investigates the cognitive neuroscience of music through neuroimaging and behavioral methods.
Her research centers on musical rhythm processing, exploring why humans move to music, neural mechanisms of rhythm perception, cross-species comparisons of music processing, and therapeutic applications of rhythm. Additional expertise includes real-time fMRI neurofeedback, cognitive training effects (brain/musical), and music's influence on memory consolidation and retrieval.
Dr. Grahn has received significant recognition:
- NSERC's EWR Steacie Award for exceptional research contributions
- Western Research Excellence Award (2023)
- Election to the Royal Society of Canada's College
She actively mentors students across academic levels. Current advisees include PhD candidates Marina Emerick (NSERC CGS-D recipient) and Ram Jagadeesan, MSc Neuroscience student Caitlin Fitzpatrick (Best Poster Award winner), and MsOT/PhD student Sarah Park. She supports trainees in securing OGS, NSERC/CIHR, Banting, and Marie Curie fellowships.
The Music and Neuroscience Lab, housed in Western's Interdisciplinary Research Building, operates within 'OurBrainsCAN' initiatives. The lab emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration through the Collaborative Specialization in Music Cognition and maintains active recruitment for undergraduate researchers, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows.
